Artwork & Design for CD Booklet & Inlays:
This is an area where most delays occur so great care should be taken in the preparation of your artwork. This is something you can easily do yourself, however your measurements will need to be accurate. If you wish, we'll design and prepare your artwork for you to the exact specifications the cd pressing plant requires.
Please check the specifications from the drop down menu you should be able to find all the information you need to produce the artwork yourselves..
Artwork requirements: We can accept artwork in Quark Xpress and Adobe Photoshop, in Mac or PC format. If you supply your artwork as tiff images we'll be happy to drop them into our Quark templates for you at no extra charge providing they need no further work at this end. They can be prepared with almost any photo editing software and supplied as flattened Tiff images at a min of 300dpi and cmyk format. If you're not sure or need to clarify anything just give us a call 01553 617546.
Artwork for booklets should be supplied as printers pairs, follow this link for a full explanation. Printers Pairs.
PDF's
You can also supply your artwork as Press Ready High Resolution PDF files. This is a great way to work, you won't need to worry about supplying fonts or which platform your artwork was created on, Mac or PC it will not matter. However they need to be produced very carefully all the same issues apply. They must be a min of 300dpi reolution and all coloured images must be cmyk format.

We use a program called Enfocus Instant PDF to both create our PDF's and to check ones we receive. You can download a free trial version to try out for yourself here, http://www.enfocus.com/products/overview.php?nr=1

Your PDF files must contain the crop and registration marks just as they would when printed from Quark or any DTP program. You can open a low res version of a press ready pdf here MJM-MM0501. This is for a product released on our own label and clearly shows an inlay with the crop and cross hair registration marks that are needed for print production.
Important Notes
Resolution: All images must be 300dpi to ensure sharp crisp printing.
CMYK: All coloured images must be in CMYK format not RGB.
Fonts: Along with your Quark files you will also need to supply every font used in your design.
(If you've supplied your artwork as flattened Tiff's, your fonts will be embedded in the image)
Measurements: Your design must conform to the layout specification, this is to ensure that the machines will be able to assemble all the parts. Incorrect artwork will be rejected by the plant, this will cause delays and add to the cost. Check the specifications from the drop down menu.
Print Out: You will also need to supply a colour print out from all pages of your design to act as a guide and reference for the print house.
Catalogue No: You will need to give your CD a catalogue number of at least six letters or numbers, e.g. MJMCD01, This is important and should be placed on your design. It assists the plant to schedule and track your job and also gives you a reference number. In the case of this example, MJM stands for MJ Music on CD format, 01 our first. You could also indicate the year as in MJMCD20031, the first for 2003.

Barcode: Bar Code Size, Height and Width.
This is of primary importance and is vital for reliable, first time scanning.
Smaller symbols require the use of higher quality printing processes.
The nominal size of an EAN-13 or UPC-A bar code is 25.93mm in height and 37.29mm wide.
The E Centre recommends that this symbol size should not be reduced below 80%. (20.74 * 29.8)
I f you require we can provide you with a bar code, give us a call to discuss this.
Artwork CD:
We suggest you burn a cd that is able to be read on other computers containing all your artwork files in the following manner. Clearly label the cd "ARTWORK FILES" along with the Album Title, the Catalogue No and all your contact details. Your Name, Address, Tel no and E-Mail.

If you're supplying flattened tiff images, make sure they have obvious names and are to the correct specification, size and resolution, then simply burn all images to a CD.

If you're supplying your artwork created in a DTP package like Quark Xpress please follow the instructions below to create your artwork cd.

Create three folders called.
Documents Folder Documents: Place all your Quark documents in here. A four page booklet job would contain the following files.
Pages 1 & 4, Pages 2 & 3, Tray, CD design. It is also good practice to name the files using your catalogue No e.g. 4-1MJMCD01, 2-3MJMCD01, trayMJMCD01, CDMJMCD01

Images Folder Images: All your CMYK and Black & White images go in here, remember 300dpi resolution

Fonts Folder Fonts: Every font used in your design should be copied into this folder. You might use a font that the print house doesn't have, so copy them here, it's very important, missing fonts will cause delays.
